The Primary Care facility of Tabankulu, the isiXhosa name for big mountain, is a double storey thatched Cape Homestead set on 10 acres of land, surrounded by mountains and fynbos, with uninterrupted views of the sea.  


Our intensive primary programme is specifically tailored for each individual using a holistic approach that recognizes human beings as body, mind and spirit.  Incorporating the Integrated Recovery Model with the best evidence-based therapeutic approaches; we seek to treat each person as a complex, unique and dynamic being.

The individual programmes we offer are:

  • 4-12 week primary care programme, including detox.
  • 4-12 week extended primary care programme (for those who have completed treatment in another facility)

These include:

  • Medical, psychological and psychiatric assessments
  • An individual care plan catered to the clients specific needs
  • Individual counselling
  • Daily experiential group therapy
  • Psycho-educational workshops
  • Video and Audio groups
  • 12 step work and fellowhip activities
  • Family programme
  • Speciality groups for gender, grief and loss, eating disorders as well as sex and love addiction groups
  • Intergrative therapies and other activities: Art therapy, organic gardening, daily mindfulness meditation, yoga, qi gong, physical excercise, mountain hikes, surfing lessons, creative therapy group, Neurotherapy using EEG-Biofeedback and participation in recylcling activities.

Our multidisciplinary primary staff team is comprised of expert addiction counsellors, a psychologist, a clinical nutritionist, a registered dietician, a consultant psychiatrist, a medical doctor and an occupational therapist.
