At Tabankulu we are committed to recovery for the whole family. We believe that addiction affects not only the active user, but a whole network of individuals and the whole family system. For this reason and because we believe that family work is central to addiction treatment, we include a Family Day in our treatment program. The Family Programme is one of the most important parts of treatment at Tabankulu. Families and their loved ones in treatment are given an opportunity to learn about addictions and disorders, discuss issues that have involved them for many years, and heal together. This is often a life-changing process where relationships can begin to heal after years of damages, hurt, and misunderstandings. Family members are guided to work on their own issues, develop self-care techniques, and learn how to support their loved ones appropriately. From the moment a person enters treatment their primary counsellor is in contact with the family members that the client invites to be a part of the process. These people are also invited to attend the Family Programme which is a day program on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The programme runs from 9am 5pm. The morning consists of families only groups. In the afternoon we run a combined group, which includes family members and the primary and secondary resident communities. This group presents a very valuable opportunity to re-build damaged relationships and practice recovery skills with the support of a broad community. The programme is as follows: Introduction group The group facilitators are drawn from our family counselling team, which has many years combined experience in family work and includes Jean Dixon, Katy Menell and Catherine Crawford. Counsellors from Primary and Secondary sit in on the morning groups and co-facilitate the afternoon combined group, which helps to facilitate the integration of the family day into the treatment program.
